No matter how familiar you are with the Move Over Law, it’s worth repeating, especially when we see articles where troopers are injured because passing motorists don’t slow down or move over when passing emergency vehicles stopped in a lane. The law, which has been passed in all states except Hawaii, requires vehicles to change into another lane, when possible, or reduce their speed and be prepared to stop.

On June 27th, 2002…the lives of two families changed forever. My brother Jesse Diaz Jr along with his two friends Pearl Rodriguez, and Ram had left my parent’s home to pick up another friend. Jesse was the Valedictorian of his senior class and was a 4.0 student at UT Austin, Pearl had dreams of one day becoming a a veterinarian. Pearl was the driver and my brother Jesse was a backseat passenger when they were hit by another driver. I remember driving home from work and from afar all I could see was flashing lights.

I will never forget the day I bought my brand new 2008 Honda Civic. It was my first car and I remember sitting in the Honda dealership and watching Michael Phelps break the record for most gold medals won at the Olympics.
Driving home that night I felt a new sense of freedom but this feeling didn’t last very long. A week after getting my car I was driving to class and was running late when I heard the sirens and saw the flashing lights behind me.

Have ya’ll ever ridden in your parents car, and they are driving the speed of snail?
This past Valentines Day, I got myself a dog. She’s a collie retriever mix and is the sweetest thing alive. I absolutely adore her. This being said, I like driving her to the park so we can play and frolic. I soon began to notice a change in my driving habits, I started to drive slower, became more cautious, kept checking on her to make sure she was ok, etc. And it hit me last night, as I was being passed and honked at by another car, I am turning into my dad!! OH EM GEEEEE!!!!

If you thought street racing was no big deal, and had no consequences, think again. Two men were convicted of three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of gross vehicular manslaughter for their connection with an October 2007 crash, in El Monte, California.
