Pedestrian Obstacle Course

distractionsimpaired drivingped and bike
Show the dangers of being distracted while walking. Students go through the obstacle course with and without distractions while being timed, and they are evaluated by time and how safely they complete the course.

 Items Needed

For the obstacle course setup:

  • Soccer cones, tape, and/or chalk
  • Stuffed animals for obstacles throughout the course
  • Notepad and pen OR cellphone
  • Stopwatch

Option – Check out our new Pedestrian Obstacle Course kit, which comes with soccer cones, tape, and signs, by completing a rented resource form.

 Steps

Setup:

  1. Pick a location and plan an outline of your obstacle course.
  2. Use cones or tape to outline the course and place stuffed animals and signs, or other obstacles, throughout.

Running the Course:

  1. Students participate by going through the course twice, first while walking undistracted and then walking distracted.
  2. Have one volunteer be the timekeeper noting the time it takes students to walk through the obstacle course.
  3. Have a second volunteer distract the walker by asking them to do simple tasks like taking a photo with their phone or write down answers to questions on the notepad.
  4. Compare the first and 2nd attempt, discussing how distractions affect our ability to pay attention while walking.
  5. Submit an activity form for All-Star credit.

 Make it GREAT

  • Print out “School Zone,” “Road Work Ahead,” and “Pedestrian Crossing” signs.
  • Tape the signs on the cones throughout the course

Escape the Risk

An interactive online game focused on pedestrian and bicycling safety around large trucks and buses.

Tabletop Simulator Activity

The Tabletop Simulator is available for schools, in limited areas, to borrow. The simulator offers multiple modules to complete, covering all risks a new driver will encounter. The user can set up a unique User ID and go through all modules, or use one User ID and focus on one risk.

Distract-A-Match

Distract-A-Match is available for schools to borrow. This activity helps you demonstrate a person’s susceptibility to distraction and how this could interfere with their ability to perform driving tasks and increase crash risk. Many people believe they can multitask while driving without it impacting their driving ability; this activity shows the effect of distractions in a safe and fun environment.

Let’s Talk… Speeding

This activity will help you facilitate a guided discussion with your peers to address their attitudes and behaviors around speeding and starts a conversation about the negative effect speed has on car crashes and how teens can speak up for their safety.
