Commit-mint Cards

TDS student leader(s) will hand out Commit-Mint safety cards that encourage their peers to speak up against impaired driving.  Use a message like, “We are thankful for your commit-mint to SPEAKING UP against impaired driving,” or, “If you feel different you drive different. Thank you for your commit-mint to never drive impaired!”

**This activity can be modified and used for other risks, too!**

 Items Needed

  • Card stock for printing safety cards. You can use this template or create your own.
  • Mint candies
  • TDS Volunteers in their TDS t-shirt

 Steps

  1. Select a date, place and time to hand out your commit-mint cards. Choose a location where you will be able to interact with lots of people such as sporting events, open house, before and after school, or during lunch. Don’t forget to challenge your teachers and administrators to make a commit-mint, too!
  2. Purchase mint candies and cardstock for cards.
  3. Decide on messaging then create and assemble cards. Be creative!
  4. Think about what you will say when handing the cards out. You could say something like, “Did you know that car crashes are one of the leading causes of injury and death for teens? Can I ask you to commit to being a safe driver/passenger by never driving impaired?”
  5. Hand out cards to your peers, teachers, parents, and administrators.
  6. Post photos of your team creating and handing out cards on your social media channels to further promote the message of safe driving and tag @teensdriverseat so we can see your great work, too.
  7. Complete an activity form for TDS All-Stars credit.

 Make it GREAT

  • Set up a table with your pledge banner during lunch, at a sporting event, or in the community and ask people to sign your pledge banner when handing out your commit-mint cards.
  • Create a message specifically for the bus drivers in your district and present them with commit-mint cards.

Let’s Talk… Impaired Driving Prevention

This activity will help you facilitate a guided discussion with your peers to address their attitudes and behaviors around impaired driving and starts a conversation about the negative effect impairment has on car crashes and how teens can speak up for their safety.

VR Goggles

The VR goggles are available for schools, in limited areas, to borrow. The VR goggles offer multiple modules to complete, covering some of the risks a new driver will encounter.

Be A Lifesaver! Activity

TDS student leader(s) will hand out safety cards with Lifesaver candy attached. Cards can have Lifesaver messaging.
