“Be the change you wish to see in the world” – Mahatma Ghandi
When you read Ghandi’s words, he inspires you to get up, re-evaluate our world and think about how you can make a difference in issues facing our society. There are many challenges teens face, but one major threat occurs when we get behind the wheel. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and a special chance for YOU to save the lives of people you care about.
Many of us can forget about the small issues that have large impacts on our lives when we get behind the wheel. These challenges that all drivers face when driving are:
- Driving while impaired;
- Distracted driving;
- Speeding and racing;
- Drowsy driving; and
- Low safety belt use.
April is your chance to be the change you wish to see because spreading awareness on how to prevent these mistakes when driving are very crucial to not only drivers, but passengers as well. During April, use your voice to remind all of your friends and family to make sure they make smart decisions in the car. Some easily made mistakes can be:
- Eating while driving,
- Putting on makeup while driving,
- Being distracted by a phone while driving, or
- Distracting the driver.
If you have a passenger, hand over your phone so they can do your texting or talking for you. If you know you will be tempted to look at or use your phone, lock it in the trunk or turn it off. Make a change today to reduce the risk of a crash tomorrow.
