Speak Up: Safe Streets Squad

High School Activity
High school team leads middle school students in learning how to “Speak Up” and be advocates for seat belts, impaired, distractions, or pedestrian safety.

 Items Needed

Based on the risk you choose (see steps below), you’ll need some activities your team can do with your local middle school/junior high. You can also come up with one of your own.

  • Seat Belt Activities
  • Impaired Activities
  • Distracted Driving Activities
  • Pedestrian Activities

 Steps

  1. Develop a plan to lead junior high students in a discussion and activities to encourage them to Speak Up for traffic safety, as the “Safe Street Squad.”
  2. Ask your advisor to contact the closest junior high school to arrange the visit.
  3. Choose the risk topic and an activity or two to conduct with the middle school students. You can also develop your own activity. Here are some additional ideas:
    1. Design a virtual card, poster, or bulletin board
    2. Create song lyrics, chant, rap, cheer, or skit
    3. If the school approves, a social media or blog post
  4. Think about each element of the activity you want to conduct and plan out supplies needed, rules, time needed, and optional prizes from your TDS kit.
  5. Take pictures of your team in action (be aware of photo rules the junior high may have) and post them on social media and your website. You can also make this a media opportunity (see Teen Traffic Voices activity).
  6.  Complete an event/activity form for TDS All-Star credit.

Don’t Forget

The goal of this activity is to encourage younger students to be more comfortable in speaking up for their safety before they can get behind the wheel.

 Make it GREAT

  • Engage the whole school!
