Seat Belt Relay

A fast-paced game to show how easy buckling up is.

 Items Needed

  • Eight students – 4 on each team (or more if you have more cars)
  • Two cars- of similar size. Cars work best so students can get in and out easily.
  • Room for students to run around the vehicle
  • Time keeper with stopwatch
  • Official for each vehicle

 Steps

  1. Place vehicles beside each other, with enough space in between for students to run through. Open doors wide.
  2. Break group into teams.
  3. Line teams up away from the vehicle.
  4. Timekeeper yells “GO” and teams race to seats in the cars.
  5. All team members must get into cars and buckle their seat belts. Official raises a hand when everyone is in and belted up.
  6. Timekeeper states the official time.
  7. Times can be posted on a whiteboard and a contest can be held over a time period for fastest time.
  8. Make sure to let participants know how easy and fast buckling up is and there should be no excuses for not wearing a seat belt.
  9. Post photos of your activity on your social media channels to further promote the message of safe driving and tag @teensdriverseat so we can see your great work, too.
  10. Submit an online activity form at t-driver.com to get credit for your efforts

MORE IDEAS:

  • Junior Highs – make sure participants sit in the correct places (back seats).
  • Want more participation? Add more teams and make it a relay race – when 1 group is done, they go back to the start and the next group goes.
  • Add in some trivia – before teams can race to the car, ask a trivia question and the first team that answers get a 5-second head start.
  • Instead of using officials, person in driver’s seat can honk the horn when everyone is completely buckled in.

Don’t Forget

The goal of this activity is to encourage your peers to always buckle up – every seat, every ride to stay safe in case of a crash.

 Make it GREAT

  • Conduct this activity during the Seat Belt Risk Unit.
  • Celebrate the winners by awarding them prizes.
