I was having the typical Friday. I had helped my 3 children get ready for the school day. We had a very busy week with a lot of family activities and the usual homework and chores. I taught at one school district and my children went to another. They all went to school together with my 17 year old driving. My youngest son, Justin always walked his little sister into the elementary and then the boys went to the high school. At 4 in the evening we were all back home doing a few things before my daughters t-ball game.

Have you ever been driving on a perfect day and a sneaky storm appears out of nowhere? Weather can change without warning, which is why it’s important to prepare yourself for driving on all types of road surfaces and in all types of conditions. The best advice is to check the weather ahead of time and avoid driving if there is a chance of snow, ice, heavy fog or rain. But, if you’re already on the road, here are some tips to get you to your destination safely.
1. Slow down! Stopping takes longer on slippery roads so increase your following distance.
2. If your windshield wipers are on, your headlights should be on. While you’re at it, turn your defroster on too.

A recent survey shows that Cypress Falls students are more likely to engage in risky driving habits than other Texas teens, prompting the school to launch Teens in the Driver Seat (TDS), the nation’s first peer-to-peer safety program for young drivers.

Are you interested in starting a Teens in the Driver Seat program at your school, but you aren’t sure how to go about it? Or has your school had a TDS program before, that is no longer active?
Here are some easy steps to starting (and maintaining) a TDS program at your school:
1. Decide who is going to be leading the project. Pick the organization that will take on TDS (ex: Student Council, FCCLA, National Honors Society, FFA, etc.). Pick the student leaders who will be in charge of the program (usually 8-12 students). Make sure that there is a teacher/sponsor who will serve as support for the program…

It’s no revelation that children and teens practice similar behaviors that they’ve seen growing up. Learned behaviors develop by watching and mimicking. When it comes to driving, this may be a very bad thing. Road rage is one thing that can be picked up by a teen, from years of watching their parent rant and rave behind the wheel.

The 2009 Driving the Message Contest has finally come to an end.
The judges had their hands full this year with a record-breaking number of entries. This year there were 163 entries, compared to last year’s 72.
