Don’t Be a Dum-Dum! Activity

Canvas the school parking lot with DUM DUM candies that have safety messages to leave them on windshield wipers or other areas where they’ll be seen by students.

Items Needed

  • Printer
  • Bag of candies (DUM DUM’s)
  • Label messages or handwritten notes
  • Tape or string

Steps

  1. Select a date, place, and time to conduct your Don’t be a Dum-Dum! activity. Choose a location where you will be able to interact with lots of people such as sporting events, open house, before and after school, or during lunch.
  2. Decide on messaging then create and assemble cards. Be creative! Here are a few examples to get you started:o
    • “Don’t be a Dum-Dum – Drive distraction-free for you and me.”
    • “Don’t be a Dum-Dum – Never drive impaired. If you feel different, you drive different.”
    • “Don’t be a Dum-Dum – Be leader, not a speeder.”
    • “Don’t be a Dum-Dum – Always buckle up every ride, every time.”
    • “Don’t be a Dum-Dum – Be a safe driver at night and never drive drowsy.”
    • “Don’t be a Dum-Dum – Never distract the driver.”
    • “Don’t be a Dum-Dum – Speak up for your safety and the safety of others while on the road.”3.
  3. Think about what you will say when handing the cards out. You could say something along the lines of, “Car crashes are one of the leading causes of injury and death for teens. Don’t be a Dum-Dum and…”
  4. Hand out cards to your peers, teachers, parents, and administrators.
  5. Post photos of your team creating and handing out cards on your social media channels to further promote the message of safe driving and tag @teensdriverseat so we can see your great work, too.
  6. Submit an online activity form at t-driver.com to get credit for your efforts.

Don’t Forget

The goal of this activity is to encourage your peers and adults in your life to understand the importance of being safe drivers and passengers and to discourage unsafe behaviors.
