You are being asked to join a research study conducted by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. A research study is a science project that is trying to answer a question. This research project is trying to motivate young drivers to drive safely on roadways. To accomplish this goal, we are asking people to download this smartphone application to their phones. When activated, this application will monitor any distractions or excessive speeding from your phone. This means that the application records a trip any time that the app is open while your car is in motion. The application collects information about the route that you drive such as latitude and longitude on a map. It also collects information such as the number of miles that you drive without using your phone or speeding excessively (which are considered “safe miles driven”). You choose to activate the application – it is optional, as is the provision of your cell phone number. You may occasionally receive notification of awards/rewards earned, updates and/or reminders about the app via your cell phone number.
No data will be recorded when you are not using the application. Information about other applications you use on your phone is not recorded. You will receive points when you complete a trip without using your phone or speeding excessively. Young drivers who accumulate enough points will be eligible for a prize in the form of a gift card.
You do not have to be in this research study or use this application. You can stop any time by not using the application.
