Kelly Smith, who was just crowned Ms. Central Texas and will be competing for Ms. America in April, has a passion for safety belts and has made it her commitment to spread her safety message to teens through Teens in the Driver Seat. Ms. Smith is volunteering her time to appear at conferences and Teens in the Driver Seat program schools to do just that.
“I’m a mom of seven beautiful children, a small business owner and an ordained minister. I have been competing in pageants for 15 years and I am the current Ms. Central Texas 2012 and will be competing at the Ms. America Pageant on April 15, 2012.
My platform is car seat and seat belt safety. I choose this because four years ago three of my children were involved in a horrible car wreck while visiting family. My daughter, who was nine at the time, was life flighted. She was in the front seat and was only wearing her lap belt. My three-year-old wasn’t in a car seat and was slammed into the back of the front seat. A lot of their injures could have been prevented had they used a car seat for my three-year-old and safety belt properly on my nine-year-old. My seven-year-old was the only one uninjured due to the proper use of his seat belt. I’m hoping to use my title to bring awareness to people of all ages about the importance of safety belts and car seats. It’s time to save lives – Buckle Up!”
Ms. Smith will be making appearances at several conferences with us. If you happen to see her, stop by and say hello.
