It was a Friday and everyone was ready to leave school. I had planned on going home with one of my friends, Sarah. We met up outside and two more people were with her. One of her friends had asked for a ride. Her house was on the way to Sarah’s so it wasn’t a big deal. We all got into the car. I was in the passenger seat, Sarah was driving, and Kate with her little sister sat in the back seat. We had to stop by my house so I could get some clothes. While I was inside, everyone else stayed in the car. When I got back in, Kate and Sarah had made an arrangement to let Kate drive after a certain point down the road. She must have been pretty convincing because Sarah was all for it. I didn’t know what was going on until we pulled over to switch seats. I didn’t want to be in the passenger seat with someone I didn’t know very well. I climbed in the backseat and buckled up. Kate’s little sister was still in the backseat but she didn’t even have a seat belt on. I buckled her up and I was surprised that her own big sister didn’t buckle her up! It kind of made me mad. We started moving and the farther we went, the more nervous I got. Kate was going faster and faster. Around every curve, over every bridge, passing other vehicles. Then she said something that made my heart skip a beat. She said, ” I drive faster when I’m scared.” I didn’t know what to think or what to say. I was in total shock. Right after she said that, my whole world was spinning around. It was completely quiet in the car. We were spinning around and we hit a ditch backwards and went back across the road and hit another ditch. When we stopped moving, the whole scene played back in my mind. The tires screeched and the world blurred. I remember seeing a red blob out of my window. When we stopped, I looked ahead of us and saw the whole wreck scene on the road. There were black skid marks on the road, mud everywhere, and sitting about two feet from our marks, was a big stop sign. We didn’t hit it. How did we not hit that sign? It was right in the way. I had trusted someone I barely knew with my life. Later on I learned that she only had her learners permit. I was just lucky to be alive and well. Take it from me, never get into a car with someone you don’t know very well, it could be the last time you get into a vehicle.
