It’s probably no surprise your kids learn how to drive before they ever get behind the wheel. After all, they’ve been riding in cars their entire lives and well before you even thought about your prince or princess getting a driver’s license, you’ve been teaching them what sort of driver to be. Uh oh, you’re thinking. Maybe you shouldn’t be so mad behind the wheel or maybe you should slow down a bit. Well, it’s not too late to be the example. Here are five areas that you should pay attention to when you’re driving to make sure Junior gets the right message:
- Obey all traffic rules. Obviously. Don’t tailgate, slow down, make complete stops and don’t speed through red lights. These are all dangerous habits, especially for a newly licensed driver.
- Never drink and drive. Why send the message it’s ok?
- Do not touch those pesky, distracting cell phone and other devices. Even hands-free. Set the best example by keeping them put away and your attention on the road.
- Don’t multi-task. Keep your hands on the wheel, eyes on the road and mind to the task of driving.
- Calm the rage. Imagine your child imitating road rage behavior. Makes you a little uneasy, right? Show patience and defensive driving.
