I was driving home from a friend’s house late the other night after helping her out with a project. She had offered the couch for the night, but my warm comfy bed was calling! The drive started out good, but as I continued on, I began to feel really tired. I was exhausted from a super long day. It felt like the longest drive ever, I couldn’t wait to just get back into bed. My body began to relax as I felt the cool breeze hit my face from the AC. My eyes started to feel heavy…
Startled, I jolted up and realized I had accidentally swerved into the next lane and the car behind me was honking at me. I had to quickly swerve back into my lane, and try to comprehend what just happened… turns out I had dozed off behind the wheel. Man it was a freaky experience; waking up to that loud honk, seeing the bright reflection of light in my rear view mirror, seeing how close the car was to me. THANK GOD I heard the horn. I should have just spent the night at my friend’s house.
We always talk about how big of an issue driving at night and fatigue is, but you don’t really realize how scary it is till it actually happens. I thought I would be fine, but fatigue is definitely a factor that sneaks up on you. I guess I should have been willing to admit how tired I was and how dangerous fatigue can be. After an experience like this, that couch sounds a lot better now.
