Big Rig Banter Card Game

Big Rig Banter is an interactive word-guessing game modeled after Taboo that helps participants learn important commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and roadway safety concepts. Players work in teams to describe transportation safety terms without using a list of prohibited words. Through friendly competition, participants build awareness of sharing the road safely with large trucks, avoiding distractions, maintaining safe following distances, and respecting all roadway users.

 Items Needed

  • Big Rig Banter game cards
  • Timer or stopwatch
  • Score sheet (optional)
  • Small prizes (optional)

 Steps

Before the activity:
  • Print and cut out the Big Rig Banter cards.
  • Divide participants into two teams.
  • Designate one facilitator to keep time and monitor prohibited words.

How to Play:

  1. Select one person from Team A to be the clue giver.
  2. Set a timer for one minute.
  3. The clue giver draws a card and attempts to get teammates to guess the word shown at the top of the card.
  4. The clue giver may describe the term but cannot use any of the words listed under “Don’t Say.”
  5. Teammates may make unlimited guesses during the one-minute round.
  6. If a prohibited word is used, the facilitator may skip the card or deduct a point.
  7. Each correctly guessed card earns one point for the team.
  8. When time expires, Team B takes its turn.
  9. Continue alternating turns until all cards have been used or a predetermined number of rounds has been completed.
  10. The team with the most points wins.

Discussion Questions:

After the game, use a few of the terms to start a conversation about roadway safety:

  • Which terms were the easiest or most difficult to describe?
  • Why do large trucks require additional space on the road?
  • What is a blind spot, and why is it important for drivers to avoid them?
  • How can distracted driving affect all road users?
  • Why is following distance important when driving near commercial vehicles?
  • What can drivers do to safely pass a large truck?
  • Why do trucks need extra room for wide turns?
  • How can motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and truck drivers safely share the road?

Don’t Forget

The goal of this activity is to create a fun and engaging way for participants to learn transportation safety concepts while encouraging respectful and responsible roadway behaviors. Use the game as an opportunity to start conversations about sharing the road safely with commercial motor vehicles and other vulnerable road users.

 Make it GREAT

  • Offer small prizes for the winning team.
  • Display transportation safety posters or educational materials near the activity area.
  • Pause occasionally to explain the real-world safety importance of selected terms.
  • Encourage participants to share one new safety fact they learned from the game.
  • Take photos of your event and post them on social media to promote safe driving and roadway awareness.
  • Submit your activity for All-Star credit.
