Thanks to the generous support from State Farm, Teens in the Driver Seat is a peer-to-peer program that you can start at no cost in your school in Arizona and California. We provide materials, resources, information and support. And you provide the leadership and voice to spread the message about safe teen driving. TDS is nationally recognized as best practice program that has been shown to increase seat belts and decrease electronic use when messaging is actively and continuously promoted within a community. What will your team do?
We want teams to spread the message about the top risks teens face behind the wheel, including nighttime/drowsy driving, speeding, distractions, low seat belt use, and impaired driving. Your team can do the activities that are outlined in our activity calendar or you can make up your own. The program is very scalable to your school and your community, because you know your peers best.
When you do activities, we want to know about them, so we ask that you complete an activity form to let us know what you did. That way, we know you are active and keeping the message alive. Your teacher/sponsor or a teen leader can complete the forms.
TDS also sponsors lots of activities and contests, which we encourage you to participate in. Like Zero Crazy where you can win a $100 gift card for your team, Driving the Message video and poster contest which awards up to $2,000 to your school, and the TDS Cup where you get points for activities and the top school wins $1,500. We will keep you informed of everything that you can participate in!
How do you get started?
We are looking for passionate teams in the above states to start the program. You will need a teacher/sponsor to help keep the team on track and a team of 10 to 12 teens to work on the program. The team can be an existing group such as FCCLA, student council, or other organized group of students who want to help. To be considered, teams must complete a short application to let us know your level of commitment. Return the application and we will be in contact if we think your school would be a great fit with the TDS program. Once approved, we send you a starter kit, and then help your team get kick-started in your activities and messaging.
The team will receive a starter kit with educational resources to use for messaging (like thumb bands, key tags and more), team t-shirts, banners, activity calendars, and more. Plus, you will have a regional representative to help you along the way. You rep will be available for phone calls and will keep you informed of all the TDS sponsored events you can take part in to earn $$ and prizes for your school.
When does the program start?
Let us know if you are interested in starting the program at your school. Once the application opens, we will let you know!
