Archer City High School teens are using their TDS program website, public service announcements and a Teen Driving Day to fight the number one killer of teens in America—car crashes.
On their website, http://achsteendrivers.wetpaint.com/, they have posted the top driving risks for teens in an effort to prevent their peers from becoming another statistic. They have also included discussion questions on the site to “create an ongoing forum for students to express their concerns and support for safe driving.”
The ACHS TDS program is developing a PSA to be aired on their local NBC network station. Their teacher-sponsor, Bethann Oswald said “They are totally engaged and have been a joy to work with.” The station’s creative services department is helping with the production, but the ideas are straight from the kids in the program.
The team is planning a teen driving day for March 11, which will include presentations from the Texas Department of Transportation, Department of Public Safety, Archer County Emergency Management and the Texas Transportation Institute. A parent awareness program will be held the night of March 11. Subjects covered will include items presented to the students throughout the day.
They will also be handing out “smarties” (to people wearing seatbelts) and “dum-dums” (to those who are not) the night of March 10 to stress the importance of buckling up.
