Stay safe this Independence Day

American FlagWith the Fourth of July weekend quickly approaching, Teens in the Driver Seat wants to remind you to be safe while you’re celebrating this year.

Driving during the holidays is very dangerous for many reasons, including an increased number of drivers on the road, drivers making more trips to see family and friends, and an increase in alcohol consumption. This is especially true for drivers with little experience.

When traveling to parties and celebrations this July 4th, keep the top five dangers in mind:

  • Driving at Night: If you are going on trips where you will be the driver make sure to get plenty of rest. Experts recommend scheduling regular stops every 100 miles or two hours.
  • Distractions: If you have passengers in the car with you make sure that they are not distracting you. Also put down your cell phone—a quick text message or phone call can wait until you arrive at your destination.
  • Speeding: Make sure you leave for your destination in plenty of time so you don’t have to speed.
  • Seat Belt Use: Make sure you buckle up no matter how far you’re driving.
  • Drunk Driving: Police officers will be stepping up enforcement this Independence Day. There is no point in increasing your chances of getting a ticket—or worse.

So have fun this Fourth of July, and stay safe while your doing it.
