National Teen Driver Safety Week declared by Congress

sideview_mirrorTo bring more awareness to the teen driver safety problem, October 18-24 has been declared National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW). This is a great time to spread TDS messages around your school.

According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA), “NTDSW has been designated by Congress as a time for communities, schools and families to raise awareness and provide solutions to teen driver crashes, the leading cause of death for teens in the United States.”

Education, awareness, stronger laws and law enforcement are all necessary to combat the teen-driving problem. Inexperience is the root of the problem, but the top-five driving dangers teens face are (in order of the level of danger):

  1. Driving at night/tired
  2. Distractions (talking/texting on a cell phone, other teen passengers, changing the radio, etc.)
  3. Speeding
  4. Not buckling up
  5. Drinking and driving
