Things Change
The Chris that I knew was funny and took everything as a joke. We were good friends and talked about a lot. But this past summer in July (2008), the Chris I knew would never be the same. One morning (after a long night of drinking) Chris decided he was hungry. He took his best friend Boone and a girl he had just met, Sam, and took off in someone else’s vehicle because his was blocked. He dropped Boone off at his house and pursued his drive to town. It was raining that morning and it didn’t help that he was speeding and drunk. He hydroplaned and lost control at 80 mph, rolled the truck 5 times and smashed into a tree. Sam was wearing her seatbelt and left the scene with a broken ankle. Chris was ejected and in very bad condition. He was rushed to the hospital where he laid for a week in a coma. For three days straight I was there and watched him suffer because they couldn’t give him medicine because his alcohol level was so high that if he took medication it could kill him. As I sat there and cried I realized he would never be the same. He had 3 bleeding spots in his brain, glass all in his face, and very bad cuts. He was in the hospital for about a month. He went through physical rehab and still takes medication. He almost took a turn for the worse, but made it out, but not the same. Some things are the same but he gets quiet and in his own world. He takes things seriously and doesn’t talk to me much about things we used to do. His memory is faded and he has difficulty dealing with what he did. If Boone were still in the vehicle he would have died. The truck was totaled completely. The thing that makes me the saddest is that he still drinks and drives, it’s like you think someone would have learned a lesson but some people just don’t realize they could of died. That is why I’m sharing this with you. I know Chris didn’t learn from his horrible wreck. But I’m hoping that you will.
